The Front Gate

The Front Gate is an industrial sci-fi game environment focused on realistic PBR graphics and optimized performance for a first person shooter.

The concept was iterated over time, but it always has it's identity as a the gateway of a train station in a gritty sci-fi world. It is inspired by various sci-fi media such as Titanfall, Warframe, and Cyberpunk 2077.

It was made using Maya, Substance Designer, Substance Painter, ZBrush, and Unreal Engine, rendered as a game screenshot in Unreal Engine.

The scene was made using a kit that was built out of two trim sheets. Every asset in the asset zoo on the left only uses the two 2048x2048 textures below, ensuring optimization of the scene by reducing draw calls and with less demand on VRAM for players.

RGB masking was used to avoid having unique high-res textures around the scene. Including the trim sheets, almost the entire scene is made using only 5 textures. The 3 tileable textures below, made in Substance Designer, covers most assets that don't use the trim sheets.

Around the scene are scattered decals, which are especially important on hero assets such as the gate itself. I used images of symbols and dirt on this gate asset to make it less symmetrical and give it more character.
